‘VAT on digital services deepens tax inequality’ - Business Mirror

Quick Summary:

AS digital service users denounced the imposition of a 12 percent value-added tax on digital services, the government’s stance on "leveling the playing field” is insensitive to consumers and deepens tax inequalities among the rich and ordinary Filipinos.

The tax measure will still exempt the following: educational services offered by private institutions accredited by the Department of Education, Commission on Higher Education, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority; subscription-based services sold to DepEd, CHEd, TESDA, or schools they recognize; and, services of banks and financial intermediaries, including those provided digitally.

Streaming service provider Netflix Inc.announced higher subscription prices across all plans beginning June 1, the day the 12-percent VAT in digital service providers will take effect in the Philippines.
